YETI Collaboration

"Permit in Mangroves" is inspired by all the time Meg, the kids and me spend down in the Florida Keys...mostly a fantasy as I have yet to get an eat from my favorite fish.  My wife's parents live in the middle keys.  Not a bad place to visit the in-laws.

I've been a fan of YETI for a long time as a fisherman and outdoorsman.  It's a lot of fun to see my work on their products.  Pick one up and look snappy this fall.

Tarpon Commission

I recently finished a Tarpon piece for a client in Minneapolis.  My boys had a good time painting on their mini easels while I chipped away at this piece.

The underpainting.  The initial phase of gauging perspective and layout.  I ended up moving the fin and shortening the mouth to proper proportion.

Sketch to Print

Below is a pencil sketch, which I then inked in, of a Redfish.  This design is part of a project I am working on...more to come on that.  We are going to be taking the kids down to the Texas Gulf soon to look for a few of these on the fly.

Spring Trip to Craig

I was able to sneak in a trip up to Craig, MT this spring with some work friends.  There were enough fish and some fabulous scenery.  I took the opportunity over coffee to work on a scene right across the river from our cabin.  This is sketched with Micron pens and took place over the course of a couple early morning sessions.

Sketchbook in Bozeman

We'll be headed out to Bozeman soon for a good friend's wedding and a little fishing too.  A sketch below of the Victory Taco stand outside the Lark Hotel.  Bozeman has changed a lot since I lived there more than a few years ago.  It is an awesome place.

I've been carrying around a little Moleskin sketchbook and doing my best to make time to stop and draw.  It's amazing what putting a drawing down can do for my mind...totally relaxes and refocuses.

Looking forward to seeing some mountains....

Austin Residents

Well, after a big move...bigger than we even thought it could be, we are living in Austin, TX!  The weather isn't too much warmer than Wisconsin from what I hear and we are exploring all kinds of new places with the kids.  The other day they found a walking stick on the porch which we all thought was pretty darn cool.

My new studio space is coming along nicely with some oldies from high school and college filling in some wall space.  I have much higher ceilings in this space and room for a drafting table, pressing workbench and an easel.  The kids love being able to come on in and set up shop for a while too.

I'm working on some pretty cool projects.  More to come....
